Hello everyone,

We are looking to start our young-of-the-year (YOY) muskellunge seining survey towards the end of the month. Sampling will occur at a set of standard sites throughout the Buffalo Harbor and Niagara River. We will be targeting YOY muskellunge using a seine in nearshore areas, counting and identifying all captured fish. Extra hands are welcome, since processing times can be significant at some of these sites. Our tentative schedule is attached below. If anyone is interested in participating, please email me directly, letting me know what days you are available. I’ll send more details on meeting locations and times just prior to sampling. The sites scheduled for each day are not set in stone, and will likely change depending on weather and speed of sampling.

Sampling will occur in vegetated shallow water areas (3-4’). Typically, we wear waders to stay dry, yet wet-wading is an option too. If wet-wading, bring a swimsuit or clothes/shoes that you wouldn't mind getting wet. Some sites are slightly deeper so staff should anticipate getting wet on those days (Strawberry Island, Motor Island, Ice Boom Bay, Bell Slip). Please note, we plan on having lunch in the field each day.

Well in the DEC's efforts to streamline NYS fishing season fates they've made musky seasons more confusing than ever. So now inland lakes open June 1st and close Nov 30th. Lake erie and the harbor open June 15th and close December 15th. The USA waters of the upper, lower and st. Lawrence now open June 15th and close December 15th. So we've unified an upper river close date with Canada but now open earlier most years. Looking like we can beat up the harbor…

Don't know if you've heard of the proposed changes in the Freshwater Fishing Regs for 2022. They deal with Trout, Walleye, bass and, yes, Musky.

The DEC is trying to align opening and closing dates to be uniform throughout the state. The big one for our club is the opening & closing dates for muskies. Instead of "Last Saturday in May" the trend is to have a hard opening date, such as June 1st. Below are just a few:

May 1 for walleye, northern pike,…

Aligning special regulations with new season dates for these species (that would be us)

NOTE: The new proposal is to open the statewide musky season June 1st. It's presently the last Sat in May.

Here's the link to the DEC's proposed regs. If you have any comments, both for or against, their email is in the link. Take the time to send one.

NOTE: The Upper & the Great Lake's regs come under "special regs." When I talked to the DEC they mentioned that the new special reg for Upper River & Great Lakes muskies would be Open June 15th & close Dec 15th
