Fishing Report 7/17

With the Hades-like temperatures predicted for today and the ever rising water temperatures, I decided this morning that this would be my last musky day until the water dips below 75 degrees again.  Since today is it for awhile, why not have a little fun and speed troll.  Next to casting, cranking up the kicker and dropping Wiley's and spinnerbaits back is my favorite way to fish.  The wind was brisk this morning, but not too bad and perfect for where I wanted to fish; weeds in UN2 and 1.  I had a hit early in front of Frenchman's on the same silver shiner Musky King I had the three on yesterday.  It could have been a bass.  Who knows?  The water had a bit more stain to it shallow, so I switched to a really hot orange tiger Wiley Head Shaker.  I always fish natural around here and I wanted to Kawartha them today, so why not fish a Kawartha hottie.  I landed a fiesty 37" with 45-feet of line out in 12' of water just as the wind increased.  I was doing 6 MPH upstream when the fish hit.  If you speed troll, back off your drag to where you can easily pull out line.  I had another hit trying the same thing in front of Strawberry.  Once again it could have been a bass, once again who knows.  Back out tonight.  Carrie's going to try my new drop shotting rig for muskies and I think I'll get started on bass season.  I can't wait to go musky fishing again.  I've been off the water for two hours and I miss chasing after the damn things already.

Nice way to take a break, Scott. I had a water temp of 74.8 in the west, but 76 in the east. Hopefully a couple cool nights will get you  back in the game soon.

Jerry Miller and I fished 5:45 to 10:45. Mostly tubed, but did some trolling. Won't troll in the east anymore, the weeds are aweful.

I had one on above the International Bridge, but lost it. Shoot. But it didn't feel real big, though I never saw it. Jerry had a couple bites, but couldn't get any hooks. Just a couple slashed tubes. So we had our chances but struck out.

Wind and waves weren't too bad until you got to the shipyards.  But made tubing difficult.

Whenever I miss a hit I try to convince myself it was a bass. It's hard to keep yourself convinced when you bring your tube back up shredded, or your Mr toothy back with a huge musky tooth stuck in the top of its head like Cullen did last week.

We should have followed Scott along the wind protected weedlines there..... We fished today as well from 630am til noon.  The wind out of the West wasn't too bad until it moved to the north a bit and started slowing down the drifts to the point of losing contact with the jigging baits.  So we moved down stream to the Eddies Run drift where the west wind would be upstream pushing us down, and we ended up doing several nice drifts near the bridge there on both sides. We were cooking along with the wind at almost 2.5mph, where the drift is normally much slower.  After ten or so good drifts without a bite we cast Dadson blade baits for a while, but the floaters were a pain so we called it.  Might cast or short line the harbor this evening.  Anyone interested? Get at me.
