Fishless report

Tubed the river yesterday for the first time this season. Nothing in the usual spots. Went down river to check out some of my old haunts. First drift a fish grabbed the green tube. I tried to crank it in as fast as I could, but that wasn't working. Although it wasn't really fighting it was a heavy fish and I was having trouble moving it. After about 15 seconds of a tug of war, the tube popped out. Never saw the fish. Lost a nice fish in the same area last year. Getting tired of getting the crap…See More

Opening day forecast

Weather forecast for this coming week appears to be quite stable, and sunny with a warming trend this weekend. Depending on the wind, which doesn't seem like much, water could be clear and calm. That could make for tough daytime fishing. Best times probably early morning and night. But water temps still seem to be down a bit. When I was out on Friday surface temps in the mid to upper 50s in both the harbor and river. Weather Service has a reading of 60 degrees (deep measurement) this am. Will…See More

Went bass fishing Friday morning in the harbor. Caught a handful of bass from 18 to 21 inches. The 21 incher was husky and looked like a 6 pounder. Haven't caught  a lot of bass this spring, but every one was over 17 inches. Wondering where the small ones are. After a while I went down to the river. A friend told me he does well casting shallow along Grand Island. I always avoided fishing for bass, pike, or anything else in the river until muskie season opens because I didn't want to hook into…See More

I've barely fished the river but between cullen and myself we have 15-20 fish to add to those totals including a couple ddinks. I've also pulled baits away from small fish already this season. Lots of mid 30s fish around right now, the ones that were Mia last summer.

Tony...thanks much for the info update and I completely agree with you on the sub-30's fish.  It is concerning & I, personally, like to see small fish caught (& properly released) for any species.  At least then, we know the fishery is healthy.  Has the fishery in the past been cyclic with up's & down's as with other species (take perch five years ago vs. now) or has there been a steady decline?  I know the sampling done by the DEC has shown a steady decline in YOY...

thanks much.

Tony...it looks like there are a lot of muskies in the 30" range caught (or lost) so far this month.  How does that compare statistically to this time last year?  Is it typical?  Does it indicate a healthier fishery than last year? Is it too early to tell?

August Meeting

Posted on August 4, 2015 at 9:30am 0 Comments

NMA members,

We learned yesterday that our August speaker had to cancel due to a family health
issue.

In lieu of the scheduled speaker, we will be reviewing this year's catch data to-date - see what's working, what may be different from years past, and how the season's progressing so far. This info should assist you in your Niagara River fishing pursuits for the next couple months.

Tony
