Hello everyone,

We are looking to start our young-of-the-year (YOY) muskellunge seining survey towards the end of the month. Sampling will occur at a set of standard sites throughout the Buffalo Harbor and Niagara River. We will be targeting YOY muskellunge using a seine in nearshore areas, counting and identifying all captured fish. Extra hands are welcome, since processing times can be significant at some of these sites. Our tentative schedule is attached below. If anyone is interested in participating, please email me directly, letting me know what days you are available. I’ll send more details on meeting locations and times just prior to sampling. The sites scheduled for each day are not set in stone, and will likely change depending on weather and speed of sampling.

 

Sampling will occur in vegetated shallow water areas (3-4’). Typically, we wear waders to stay dry, yet wet-wading is an option too. If wet-wading, bring a swimsuit or clothes/shoes that you wouldn't mind getting wet. Some sites are slightly deeper so staff should anticipate getting wet on those days (Strawberry Island, Motor Island, Ice Boom Bay, Bell Slip). Please note, we plan on having lunch in the field each day.
