Guacamole Lessons 10/28

Hit the river this am with the intentions of jigging and casting the mud until the north wind left me with no other option but to troll.  Managed to get a few less than ideal drifts in and even a bite before the river capped up and the surface current started moving in the wrong direction.  At 10:45 after about a half hour of driving around doing what felt like wasting time I decided to send a txt msg seeking advice and comic relief from our fearless leader Scott Mckee.  The msg was simple, "I need Guacamole lessons, I suck at this".  Scott gave sound advice with his normal comedic delivery and basically reassured that I was on the right path, but I was fishing in chocolate milk and should probably add praying to my trolling tactics.  I worked my way over structure banging lures off every hump  I could get them to hit and sure enough at 11:10 my rod pinned, clicker ripped and a huge headed, plump, mangle tailed niagara skii hit the net.  Still not Queenie but I'll take a thick 46.5 anytime, thanks for the words of encouragement Scott.

Thanks John, but that's what I'm here for.  For those interested in my advice on fishing the mud, here's my reply to John's text

• Pretend you are night fishing on the darkest night ever.  Pound obvious fish holding structure and small areas until you are brain dead.  Slow down.  Fish loud.  Pray.  It doesn't help, but it doesn't hurt either.  How is the visibility?  If it's 2-3 feet, you have a decent shot.  Less than that and you are generally wasting gas.

Thanks, the fish where I'm sticking out tough conditions or trying to fig out something new are the ones that keep me addicted. Any luck today? I managed 1 mid 30s fish on a magdawg early, had a fish chase and love tap a tube below the boat and then Cullen and I both lost a fish in the same drift about 1130ish in lunge lane before calling it at about 1. Other than that the day was uneventful.

10/29 Report

Carrie and I hit the River today hoping for 2+ feet of visibility and we were happy to see the west side had about four.  I caught a 36" (or so) casting (yes, casting) a hot perch Legend Perchbait just below Frenchmen's, on a very long pause.  I was shallow, throwing deep and the fish hit just prior to me starting my "L".  My last casting fish came on a long pause, so I've been throwing into the mix lately.  That was all the action we had.

We cast and trolled UN2, 13 and 12.  The River clarity is beautiful.  Out tomorrow with Jiggin' Joe.  We are getting a late start (around 2PM).  So, I guess I can listen to the World Series.  I need the Lowrance / Apple / Sunbeam 30HD-T.  It's a fictional talking sonar, GPS, flat screen TV, sentient computer and toaster oven!  I can hear it now: "After a leadoff double by Victorino, Pedroia was hit by Wacha.  So Ortiz steps in with no outs and chance to blow this game wide open.  You are approaching a hump.  Turn to heading 2-7-0.  First pitch in there for a strike.  Adjust heading to 2-7-5.  Wacha checks Victorino at second.  Deals.  ORTIZ DOES IT AGAIN!  HE ISN'T HUMAN!  You have a fish on.  His fourth home run of this series sails into the right field bleachers and the Boston faithful are going insane!  The Sox lead it 6 to 0!  Waypoint marked and release submitted to NMA Web site.  That will be all for Wacha.  Your pizza rolls are ready.  More from game 6 after these messages.”
