Gizzard Shad Die-off
I've attached a pdf regarding the large number of dead gizzard shad observed in the Niagara River and Buffalo Harbor. The DEC issued a press release yesterday which I've posted here:

After reading the letter,looks like our Great Lakes Strain Muskies have lots of food out in Lake Erie if the Gizzard Shad populations are up as they suggest.

I'm not sure about the fish dying in late winter. I ice fished Erie Basin in January and the dead shad were already there. They had apparently died during high winds/water because they were frozen to the harbor walls and dock supports at least 15 inches above the ice.

I have heard of fish die offs in the winter before. I think it might depend on water depths and also how quickly the water cools off. The article I posted on Monday about ice fishing for pike talks about fish die offs. They were referring to ciscoes but I think they are similar to gizzard shad.
