July 8 report

Fished from 5:30 am to 11:00 am. Not a hook-up.

Third trip in a row without a hook-up. Not used to that.

Maybe it's the light easterly winds. Maybe the bright sunshine. Maybe it's me. 

Can't seem to find a west wind. 

Calm winds and sunshine are the worse. 

Need a weather change. 

If something doesn't break, I'll have to fish the night. Maybe that would help.

Tony from the reports I've been getting the afternoon jigging bite has been very good. I've always hated afternoon on the Niagara due to the boat traffic but I may have to try myself if I get out this week. Buddy got 3 fish with a 49.5 and 46.5 the other day in just a couple hours. That's worth dodging a few boat wakes. Lol. I was out Friday from 11pm until 5am. Went 2 for 3 between 315 and 405am. Nothing the rest of the night. Just gotta catch that bite window I guess.

I should probably sleep in and stay out later. The wind does seem to pick up a bit in the afternoon, which at least might provide some relief from the sun. It's the summer heat which bothers me more than anything. 90 on Wednesday.

Boats never seem to bother the muskies. Nor the heat either. But they're in the water!

I fished with Scott Kitchen on Friday and he caught a 45.5” muskie and shortly after I caught a mid 30s. I went out solo in the east wind from 10 pm-4am this morning and lost a fish just before getting it to the boat. I’m thinking about fishing daylight..

The action at night can be great and I love the peaceful environment but you miss out on so much interaction with your surroundings. I miss the little environmental cues that happen up above that coincide with what's happening down below and clue you in to possible fish activity. I miss the visual aspects of the fight, the follows, boatside strikes, fish going airborne before I can even get the rod out of the holder. Even getting to watch the sunset knowing that magic hour is about to begin and then remembering I still have my sunglasses on and it's a lot lighter than I thought out still. It's always fun to mix it up but I've definitely grown to love fishing the afternoon into sunset more that any other time of day. Just not so much here on the Niagara with all the pleasure boaters..
