Keep in mind that I am always looking for images for our newsletter; fish, sunsets, sunrises, other anglers fishing, equipment, anything fishing related. I can use them all.  Large, unedited images are best. Thanks.

Thank you, Jay!

The 2nd vid shows the actual dropping of the receiver & satellite anchors. A couple of things to watch:

1. When Chris drops the receiver in, the guy at the wheel marks a waypoint on the graph. Justin will send those coordinates to GLATOS so everyone knows exactly where it is. If another fish (like a walleye) triggers a hit, GLATOS sends the receiver # & GPS coordinates to the other agency so they'll know exactly where the fish was spotted

2. The satellite anchor is also marked so when it's time to retrieve, the DEC drags between the 2 coordinates

3. When the receiver is dropped, the boat is put in reverse to stretch the braided poly rope to give some length to grab with the grappling hook or for Scott to snag with his Plow

4. They had a lot of practice last year & ended up putting in 12 in one day this year

Thanks much for posting, Tony. The plan is to pull those receivers out in July, download the data & place somewhere else. We'll need to work on that next.

The 1st vid is Andy Lacko playing chicken with the DEC boat. Turn on the sound & you can hear the wind. The DEC loaded 6 receivers & 6 satellites at a time, dropped six, had lunch, then loaded up 6 more.

They spend quite a bit of time figuring out where to drop the receivers & the direction to drop each satellite. Every coordinate, date, & time is recorded & the info uploaded to the GLATOS site, so everyone knows all the info associated with their fish

Hi Scott,

Yes, great newsletters!  I haven't given the attention I'd like to yet - things have been hectic, but I really like the fishing reports.  You guys are doing some amazing stuff - the detailed logs, telemetry work, newsletters and of course making and providing leaders, bait making activity... wow!  I really appreciate how welcoming you've all been.

Cheers!

Dave

Dave...if you want to read a good account of the work that goes into electro-fishing and implanting each musky, read the June 2017 newsletter. It was written by Justin Brewer who is the DEC's fish biologist doing the tagging.

If you enjoyed last month's meeting with NYS Parks, you'll probably like our March 5th meeting too. Tim DePriest of the DEC will be doing a presentation on the Spicer Creek project for habitat rehab.

Hi John, sounds interesting. i heard the next one is telemetry. do you know who's talking about it (presenting)? Are meeting topics posted here somewhere? Thanks, Dave

Dave...Hope to get to meet you Tuesday, the 5th. Our main speaker on that day will be Tim DePriest, like I said, presenting on the DEC's Spicer Creek project. It's a real good project because of the very heavy wave action & shoreline destruction from all the recreational boaters. A lot of guys don't even want to fish the weekend anymore. Scott K might also be covering Telemetry info

Scott Kitchen (the other Conservation Director) and myself are the ones coordinating the Acoustic Telemetry project. We got a $200,000 grant a f ew years ago to study spawning behavior & possible spawning habitat rehab areas in the Bflo Harbor by tagging muskies with transmitters & placing receivers in the Bflo Harbor. We usually have two meetings a year; one in Feb & one at the end of the yr to discuss the year past. I know it's short notice but we have a Telemetry meeting scheduled Tues, Feb 19th, 7:00 p.m. at the Eldredge Club to discuss our strategy for the upcoming year. Why don't you show up if you can? Guaranteed you'll learn plenty. Also attending will be a couple of the fish biologists from the DEC since they do the tagging & spotting of receivers. The meeting will be in the room past the bar, way back in the corner, 7 p.m.. Hope you can make it.

Hi John, thanks for the suggestions, I’ll look into them. I misunderstood and thought the telemetry meeting was your next regular meeting. Unfortunately it’s at the same time as our chapter meeting in Hamilton and I’m the chair so can’t really miss it... our AGM is this weekend so this chapter meeting is an important one. I plan to be at your next regular meeting. It would be great to discuss the telemetry project if you have time. Of course I’d be happy to come at another time if it’d suit you. Thanks again!

Dave
